Conflict Resolution Guide

Every relationship has conflict. The goal isn't to avoid it — it's to handle it in a way that brings you closer instead of driving you apart.

1. De-escalate first

When emotions run hot, pause. Take a break, breathe, and agree on a time to return to the conversation.

2. Listen to understand

Repeat back what you heard, ask questions, and resist the urge to prepare your reply while the other person is speaking.

3. Use 'I' statements

Share your experience without blame: "I feel unheard when…" instead of "You never listen."

4. Focus on the issue, not the person

Attack the problem, not each other. Name the specific behavior and its impact, and move toward solutions together.

5. Repair and reconnect

After resolution, make a point to reconnect. A repair attempt — an apology, a gesture, a check-in — is what heals.
